There are a number of means of astigmatism correction. But, if you want a permanent solution, a LASIK procedure is probably the answer.
Astigmatism is a vision disability where a person's vision in one or both eyes is blurred due to an incorrect lens curvature in the cornea. The curvature of the lens causes light rays to bend improperly. As a result, the person ends up with blurred vision. Astigmatism is one of the most common vision problems.
Over the years optometrists have developed a number of ways to deal with astigmatism. Eye glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises, and LASIK surgery are the most common means.
Astigmatism Correction Using LASIK
LASIK is an operation that permanently alters the shape of the cornea. The use of lasers to correct astigmatism was approved by the FDA in 1998. It is an extremely effective method of correcting astigmatism.
What Causes Astigmatism?
The eye is first examined by a computer to determine the degree of astigmatism in the eye. It then calculates what laser cuts have to be made to the cornea to correct it by altering its shape.
Unfortunately for most people, LASIK is considered to be an elective procedure. Therefore, if you want this type of surgery done, you will probably end up paying for it out of your pocket.
LASIK is a refractive form of surgery. And there is an older form of refractive surgery that uses a scalpel. But the laser operations are the most popular and the most accurate.
Astigmatism Correction Using Eye Glasses or Contact Lenses
For many years, eye glasses were the only available treatment for astigmatism. The glasses were made in such a way to correct the bending of the light to compensate for the incorrect natural lens curvature.
It is possible in some cases that some slight astigmatism will remain after a LASIK operation. In this cases the patient and doctor may decide to have a second operation to make the necessary adjustments. Or, alternatively, they may decide to settle for a new prescription pair of eye glasses, or contact lenses - albeit one requiring less correction.
Astigmatism Correction Via Eye Exercises
There is a great scepticism involving the efficacy of vision exercises to improve astigmatism. Although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of people who claim that eye exercises has fixed their astigmatism there have been no peer reviewed trials that prove this.
Exercises For Astigmatism
At this point, the most that can be said about them is that, at least, there is very little chance of them causing harm to your eyes. But there is very little real proof that they will be effective.
Even moist of the promoters of correcting astigmatism using exercise don't claim that they can correct all instances of the disease. Sometimes the degree of astigmatism may be so great that there is really no alternative to surgery.
